Dockstr

Subsea laser scanners, structured-light and photogrammetry systems for subsea metrology, dimensional control and as-built survey; distributed by Dockstr from its survey OEM partners.

Subsea 3D measurement systems distributed by Dockstr from their survey OEM partners; laser scaling, underwater laser profilers, structured-light mountings and photogrammetry suites that turn inspection video into dimensioned, repeatable geometry. Tell us the host platform and the accuracy you have to achieve, and we configure the system around it with the manufacturer.

3D Measurement - what the desk handles

Measure it, not just see it

Laser scaling, profiling and photogrammetry convert inspection footage into dimensioned output a client engineer can sign off.

ROV, diver and static mount

Heads scoped for work-class and observation ROV, diver-held frames and fixed tripod or skid deployments.

Accuracy stated up front

Range, standoff and accuracy envelope are confirmed with the OEM before PO release, not discovered offshore.

Processing and deliverable

Point cloud, mesh and dimensioned report workflows quoted alongside the hardware, including operator training.

Buying

Tell us the measurement task; spool metrology, damage sizing, marine growth quantification, as-built capture or dimensional control before fabrication. We confirm the achievable accuracy envelope with the manufacturer and return a configured proposal covering the sensor head, calibration, processing software and training.

Selling

Metrology and imaging manufacturers looking for distribution coverage across our regions are welcome to get in touch. Contractors and survey houses holding surplus scanners, laser heads or processing licences are handled separately, on the used-equipment side of the business.

In detail

How this segment is distributed

Inspection tells the client that something is there. Measurement tells them how big it is, how far it has moved and whether the replacement spool will fit. That step (from qualitative video to dimensioned geometry) is where subsea metrology sits, and it is the part of a survey scope that carries contractual weight.

Three technologies dominate. Calibrated laser scaling puts parallel dots or lines in frame so features can be sized against a known baseline. Laser profiling and structured light sweep the target and return a profile or point cloud. Photogrammetry reconstructs geometry from overlapping stills or video, and is often the cheapest route to a full as-built model when the vehicle can fly a disciplined pattern.

Dockstr supplies the sensor hardware and, where required, the processing software and workstation. Acquiring, processing and delivering the survey data itself remains with the operator or their survey contractor.

Calibrated scaling lasers; in-frame reference for dimensioned inspection output.

Specification starts with the host platform and the standoff and station-keeping you can realistically hold. A work-class ROV with a hydraulic skid can carry a heavy scanner and hold station in current; an observation vehicle on a tether reel cannot, and the answer there is usually laser scaling plus photogrammetry rather than a scanning head.

From there we work through depth rating, water clarity, target reflectivity, required accuracy at working range, power and comms budget, and how the data leaves the vehicle. Turbidity is the constraint operators most often underestimate; a system that resolves millimetres in clear water behaves very differently in a silt-laden estuary, and the proposal says so.

Guidance given here and during an enquiry is technical information to support your own selection. Performance figures are confirmed by the manufacturer, and suitability for a given scope of work stays with the buyer and their survey team.

Measurement equipment is only as good as its calibration record. Laser separation, camera intrinsics and scanner alignment are calibrated at the factory and re-verified before mobilisation; class and client representatives increasingly ask to see that certificate alongside the survey report.

We scope calibration frames, verification targets and the re-calibration interval into the original order. Where a client’s procedure requires third-party verification, the OEM’s calibration data is issued in a format their assurance team can accept.

Most measurement enquiries are additions to an existing vehicle rather than a new spread. Mounting envelope, power draw, comms bandwidth for high-rate imagery, on-vehicle storage and the topside processing workstation all need to be agreed with the ROV or AUV OEM before the purchase order is released.

The desk runs that conversation with both manufacturers in the room. Delivery and logistics are handled by the OEM; Dockstr stays your commercial point of contact through commissioning, training and after-sales.

Measurement heads are usually an addition to a working vehicle, not a new spread.

Scaling laser sets, older scanning heads and processing workstations turn over regularly as survey houses refresh. If the accuracy requirement is modest and the budget is fixed, the brokerage desk can work the secondary market instead; same team, different route.

Technical

Choosing between the measurement techniques

Laser scaling

Parallel lasers of known separation; sizes features in frame. Lowest cost, works on any camera-equipped vehicle, accuracy limited to what the operator can hold square to the target.

Laser profiling

Sheet or scanning laser plus camera; returns cross-sections and point clouds. Strong on pipeline, weld and free-span profiling. Sensitive to turbidity.

Structured light

Projected pattern reconstructed in three dimensions. High resolution at short standoff; used for close-range component and damage capture.

Photogrammetry

Overlapping stills or video reconstructed into a textured mesh. Best full-structure as-built coverage per pound spent, dependent on flight discipline and lighting.

Acoustic metrology

Long baseline acoustic measurement for spool metrology across distances where optics cannot reach. Quoted alongside the positioning equipment.

FAQ

Common questions

It depends on technique, standoff and water clarity rather than the badge on the housing. Close-range structured light and profiling systems work at millimetre level in clear water; photogrammetry over a full structure is typically centimetre level. We confirm the achievable envelope with the manufacturer against your actual working conditions before you commit.

Scaling lasers and photogrammetry, yes; most observation vehicles carry them comfortably. Heavier scanning and structured-light heads usually need a work-class or light work-class vehicle for the power budget and station keeping. The desk checks the integration with the vehicle OEM during the proposal.

Factory calibration is supplied with the system, with verification targets and a re-calibration interval agreed at order stage. Where your client or class society requires third-party verification, we arrange the calibration data in a form their assurance team accepts.

Configuration-dependent. Standard scaling and camera-based packages are frequently available from partner stock; scanning heads and bespoke skid integrations run to a build slot. The proposal carries a confirmed date from the manufacturer rather than an estimate.

Yes; the point cloud, mesh and reporting workflow is quoted with the hardware, and operator training is arranged with the OEM at the factory or during site acceptance.
